UBUNTU - Install log

Posted by: fay

I've installing linux for so many but today I realize i need to log on this... i'm getting older...

This log has been logged step by step for UBUNTU 8.04x..

1. after finish install

As default Ubuntu has no password set for the root user. To gain root access you have to type in your own user password. This is the password you set for the first user while installing Ubuntu.

To manually set a password for the root user, type in the following in the shell:

sudo passwd

After that you are asked to type in the new root password twice. Finally, your root user has its own password.

2. check this software updated ot install it if not in
as root

apt-get install wget
apt-get install lynx

both for getting some file by using command at linux bash.. lynx is text browser..

3.  normal config for network is DHCP but i more preffered static so we can easly ssh/ftp/webmin etc later so to change this open

 # cd /etc/network
edit interfaces with your fav text editor

 # vim interfaces

the normal one with installation with if your current having router etc like this (DHCP preset)

-------------

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

-------------

change to (if you have 1 NIC)

-------------

# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
# iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface eth0 inet static
address 200.200.200.252 <<your server ip address
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 200.200.200.0 <<your network
broadcast 200.200.200.255 <<your broadcast
gateway 200.200.200.1 <<your gateway
dns-nameservers 200.200.200.1 202.188.0.133 <<your dns

-------------

if you have 2 NIC remove the gateway line above and addmore eth1 (NIC no 2) to your config.. but it's all depands on your config...i put 200 on top thic config your easy read or see the difrent so you need to change suit your ip's

4. install webmin

a. if u preffered x-desktop for later use then u can install it from there but 1st u need to install x like gnome by typing

 sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

for KDE type

 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

>> read more in this Source

b. else for blasting fast server we won't need  x-server so just straight to the point from bash type

sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl

then download the latest from webmin.com this case this below is the latest version but please check at the web for the latest version

# wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.470_all.deb

then install it

# dpkg -i webmin_1.470_all.deb

if it ask to many question oif your server complains that there is some library things does not find. Just run the following command

# sudo apt- get install -f

this confing sample for #3 above.. by using 2 NIC and NIC1=eth0 as to network and using static IP and NIC2=eth1 using auto ip DHCP and this connecting to router for internet coming and wireless access..
chang the dhcp on eth1 similiar to eth0 if u're using static ip
read more how easy working with apt read this http://www.debian.org/doc/m...
